This is a doctoral dissertation. Conflict resolution through negotiated agreement is an important form for international dispute settlement. The conditions which shape the prospects for an agreement's durability are however largely unknown. This study focuses this specific problem: under what conditions are boundary agreements durable? Fifteen inter-state boundary agreements from conflicts active between 1945 and 1979 are analyzed with respect to geographical (physical & social) variables and to systemic (international law, other state's involvement and party cooperation). "Durability" is measured by three measures, all related to a "durable agreement" defined as an operational political document which has been in force long enough to allow invalidation by potential internal opponents. A re-examination of these and other results did not challenge the original findings. Thus, it is possible for the author to develop elements of a theory of durable peace agreements in the final chapter.
