This book provides information on the maps which were included in the first regular atlas to ever appear (1570), called Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, at first containing 53 maps and finally growing to 166 maps, making it the most expensive book of the 16th Century, with more than 700 copies printed.
This current illustrated guide gives information on the occurrence of each map in various atlas editions, the various states that most maps went through, and provides their cartographical sources. The guide opens with a short biography of Ortelius, offers a survey of the editions of his atlas, and is concluded by indexes to help accomplish quick map identifications.
