This book was written in Baghdad around 300 AH / 910 AD and is the most important work of early Muslim historiography. Advocating a combination of careful source criticism and independent judgement, the author, among other things, placed Islamic history in a broader context by comparing it to Biblical and Persian traditions.

The four papers presented in this volume were read at a seminar at Goteborg University in May 2003. They approach at-Tabari's History from different angles, discussing it in relation to post-modern theories, structural analysis, the political situation, and source criticism. All in all, the papers exemplify some of the possibilities for interesting research that the History can inspire.
