This is a Ph.D. thesis. Treatment of pain in preterm and term infants became a major issue since the landmark observations of Anand who documented that adequate analgesia decreased mortality and morbidity in preterm neonates who underwent surgery for ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus.

Although recognition and treatment of pain therefore are nowadays important indicators of quality of care delivered to neonates, population-specific difficulties have to be considered.
