This is a Ph.D. dissertation. This thesis deals with the Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of materials, specifically the Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) technique for detecting corrosion in metals. In this chapter, we provide some background information and a general overview of NDE techniques. The problems discussed in this thesis are defined and the general concepts of forward and inverse problems are introduced. An outline of the thesis can be found in Section 1.6 of this chapter.

Contents include: Introduction, Basic Equations, The PEC tool and the measurement setup, The forward problem, Numerical results for the forward problem, The inverse problem, Numerical results for the inverse problem, Discussion and Conclusions.
