An annotated summary of the higher classification of the superfamily Buprestoidea is presented to serve as a review document for the structure of the world catalogue currently under preparation by the author and to amalgamate the many changes to the classification scheme for various elements of the group that have been proposed since the last such summary 17 years earlier. The classification presents data from superfamily to subgenus giving all synonyms, type genera for all family-group names, type species for all genus-group names and a brief assessment of the number of species for each genus and known regional biogeographical distribution.
