In this Doctoral Dissertation, the influence of cyclic plastic deformation on the mechanical properties of welded structures in investigated. Two sub-areas of investigation were identified: the cyclic plastic deformation of base material and the generation of residual stresses due to welding. Both sub-areas were investigated using experimental and numerical techniques. A practical example of where cyclic plastic deformations are applied to welded structures is the reeling and unreeling of pipelines as used in the offshore oil and gas industry. This example is used as the basis of the work described in this thesis. This project was part of the interfaculty research program DIOC10 of Delft University of Technology.
