A number of guides and atlases are devoted to the study of the European butterflies. Unfortunately most of these deal only with Western and Central Europe. There is scattered information about species structure and distribution of the butterflies in Eastern Europe in works treating the Palaearctic as a whole or partly or works covering only smaller parts of Eastern Europe, like the Urals, the Caucasus or the northeastern part of the Russian Federation.

Until now, there was no comprehensive survey of the butterflies of Eastern Europe within a single volume and the present book thus fills a gap in this respect. This book is an outcome of 20 years of study of the Palaearctic butterfly fauna by the author, encompassing both field work and a thorough survey of some of the main museum and private butterfly collections, in which Eastern European butterflies are kept.
