Agriculture is the cradle of civilization. It was only when mankind ceased to be nomadic that a social pattern could be created that provided all the functions needed for the accumulation of wealth and the development of our material and spiritual culture. This took place about 6,000 years ago. Agriculture was long the dominant industry in Sweden. At the begining of the century more than half of the working population were directly employed in agriculture. Today the figure is a mere three percent. What other industry can show such a radical transformation? The changes have, of course, left their mark, in a society as a whole, in agriculture and in the landscape.
