High levels of aid can be well used in countries with strong institutions. In countries with weak institutions, high levels of aid may backfire, making governance reforms more difficult. This book analyzes the political economy of aid dependence, and how aid dependence may create disincentives for development. In contrast to this gloomy picture, the study also sketches how Botswana and Taiwan, two success stories of development, have handled their aid relations.
